Motivational Interviewing for HIV Service Delivery

DATE:  Oct 03, 2023 - Oct 04, 2023
TIME:  9:00 AM - 3:00 PM
DESCRIPTION:  Working in the field of HIV prevention and care service delivery provides practitioners with a unique opportunity for early intervention with clients living with HIV or at an increased risk for HIV. Often these clients will bring up a number of behavioral and health concerns that need to be skillfully addressed in order to reduce their risk for HIV. This two-day workshop provides participants the opportunity to develop and practice communication skills essential for having effective and efficient change conversations. The skills and strategies used are derived from the evidence-based practice of motivational interviewing. An emphasis will be placed on establishing a person-centered relational foundation with a client through effective listening and reflection.

Objectives:
• Describe key concepts for effective conversations.
• Be able to identify the core skills of asking, listening and informing and how they are effectively used in conversations about behavior change.
• Demonstrate a basic level of fidelity of these skills in change conversations and practice fundamental communication concepts and skills related to HIV prevention and risk reduction for clients seeking HIV testing and prevention services.
• Develop a plan for integrating skills into routine practice.
